Abstract

Background and Aims: Baveno-VII recommends early initiation of oral feeding after endoscopic treatment in patients with acute variceal bleeding(AVB). Liver plays important role in energy metabolism(EM). Cirrhotic patients have altered EM leading to malnutrition. There is limited evidence on energy requirement in this scenario, especially in context of systemic fasting preceding endoscopic therapy which these patients often have. The present study assessed resting energy expenditure(REE) and substrate oxidation {respiratory quotient(RQ)} by indirect calorimetry(IC) and measured REE(mREE) was compared with predicted REE(pREE) by existing equations in patients with cirrhosis presenting with AVB.REE was measured as both whole body(WB) y weight(DW) and per kg DW.
