Abstract
This Special Volume is devoted to selected papers presented at the Second Madrid Conference on Queueing Theory (MCQT’06) held at the Complutense University of Madrid during July 3–7, 2006. The Madrid Conference on Queueing Theory aims to be a meeting place where scientists and technicians in the field can find a discussion forum to promote research, encourage interaction and exchange ideas. The conference is open to all trends in Queueing Theory including development of the theory, methodology, computational advances and applications. This second conference gathered 91 participants from 23 countries. The Program Committee had the following members: I.J.B.F. Adan (The Netherlands), E. Altman (France), J.R. Artalejo (Spain, Chairman), H. Bruneel (Belgium), S.R. Chakravarthy (USA), X. Chao (USA), B.D. Choi (Korea), A.N. Dudin (Belarus), G. Koole (The Netherlands), G. Latouche (Belgium), V. Ramaswami (USA), T. Takine (Japan), P.G. Taylor (Australia) and U. Yechiali (Israel). O.J. Boxma (The Netherlands) gave the Opening Lecture. The papers in this Volume make a significant contribution to the topic “Computational Methods and Applications in Queueing Theory”. Each submission was reviewed by two referees and finally 10 papers were selected. The journal Queueing Systems devoted volume 56, issues 3–4, to papers focused on the topic “Theoretical and Methodological Advances in Queueing Theory ”. I am deeply indebted to the members of the Local Committee (M.J. Alcon, I. Atencia, A. Gomez-Corral, M.J. Lopez-Herrero, P. Moreno and A. Rodrigo) who carried out the major share of the logistic work, and to the late Prof. Peter Hammer, former Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Operations Research, for entrusting me with this editorial work. I also would like to thank all of the authors who submitted to this Volume and to the referees who reviewed the papers carefully.
