Abstract
Abstract The maximum thickness of the continental lithosphere is considered to be in ancient platforms. This parameter can be identified with the thickness of the conductively cooling layer. A thermal model of the lithosphere was constructed by taking into account erosion of an upper crust enriched with radioactive elements. The results of the simulation agree with the well-known relationship between the heat flow and the age of the geological units when the thickness of the lithosphere is 200 km. A 200-km value is in good agreement with the lithospheric thickness estimates obtained for the Siberian platform, based on seismic and magnetotelluric sounding data. Permian-Triassic trap magmatism in this region seems to be associated with melting of eclogite lenses at considerable depths in the lithosphere.
