Abstract

ABSTRACT The prostates of 8 foetuses and neonates with a maternal history of low oestriol levels have been examined and the findings have been compared with those of 34 controls. The appearances of maturation in the prostate, i. e. squamous metaplasia, proliferation of tubule epithelium and secretion did not differ significantly from those in the controls. This was in contrast to our previous observations in the prostates of 8 anencephalic monsters where the maternal oestriol is usually also at a low level. These cases showed a considerable or even excessive degree of squamous metaplasia, as well as diminished proliferation of tubule epithelium and diminished or even absent secretion in all but one case. The significance of these findings has been discussed.
