Abstract

Over the past several years, both Ontario, Canada and Mainland China have been taking steps toward curriculum reform. Part of that process includes learning from the curricula of other nations. In this chapter, we give an overview of the current mathematics curriculum used in the two jurisdictions. Ontario’s elementary mathematics curriculum was published in 2005 and covers grades one to eight while China’s elementary mathematics curriculum covers grades one to six. We will first introduce the history and research that influences the current curriculum. Then we will discuss the aspects of the curriculum such as the strands of mathematics content and assessment.
