Abstract

Engineers have always needed predictive simulation tools to assess the consequences of hydraulic projects before their implementation. Industrialisation added a new dimension to engineering problems: that of the transport and fate of pollutants in rivers and, more generally, water quality problems. Physical reality is extremely complex and engineers face a whole spectrum of river sizes: from small urban or rural streams to water courses several thousands kilometres in length.
