Abstract

Unexplained recurrent pregnancy losses have been assumed to be caused by an immunologic defect causing maternal reactions to the fetus. Recently, it has been recognized that the maternal human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DRB1*01 is a genetic marker of predisposition to heretofore unexplained recurrent pregnancy losses. A 33-year-old woman presented with three unexplained pregnancy losses. The HLA typing of the patient was performed by molecular methodology; she was typed by hybridization of polymerase chain reaction products with sequence-specific primers. The patient tested positive for the DRB1*01 allele. This genetic marker or closely linked genes seem to predispose to recurrent pregnancy losses.
