Newest Diabetes-Related Technologies for Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes and Its Impact on Routine Care: a Narrative Synthesis of the Literature.

Purpose of ReviewThis review aims to address the actual state of the most advanced diabetes devices, as follows: continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions (CSII), continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGM), hybrid-closed loop (HCL) systems, and “Do-it-yourself” Artificial Pancreas Systems (DIYAPS) in children, adolescents, and young adults. This review has also the objective to assess the use of telemedicine for diabetes care across three different areas: education, social media, and daily care.Recent FindingsRecent advances in diabetes technology after integration of CSII with CGM have increased the popularity of this treatment modality in pediatric age and shifted the standard diabetes management in many countries. We found an impressive transition from the use of CSII and/or CGM only to integrative devices with automated delivery systems. Although much has changed over the past 5 years, including a pandemic period that precipitated a broader use of telemedicine in diabetes care, some advances in technology may still be an additional burden of care for providers, patients, and caregivers. The extent of a higher rate of “auto-mode” use in diabetes devices while using the HCL/DIYAPS is essential to reduce the burden of diabetes treatment.SummaryMore studies including higher-risk populations are needed, and efforts should be taken to ensure proper access to cost-effective advanced technology on diabetes care.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40124-021-00248-7.

ADOPTION OF DIGITAL MEDIA BY AFRICAN LANGUAGE PRINT NEWSPAPERS: THE CASE OF ISOLEZWE

Digital media have transformed media’s news gathering, production and news dissemination traditions. However, African language newspapers’ use of digital media has been overlooked and understudied. Therefore, this study explores the adoption of digital media by Isolezwe, a South African indigenous language newspaper that publishes in IsiZulu. Data were gathered using the interview and observation methods. Deploying strands drawn from media convergence and diffusion of innovation theories, the study shows the convergence of African language print media and digital media, and advancement of African language newspapers towards increasing their digital and social media presence. This development has positively enhanced Isolezwe’s journalistic functions of newsgathering and dissemination. The study provides insights into understanding African language journalism in the context of the advancement of digital and communication technologies. Findings from this research show that Isolezwe has expanded its digital presence to social media. Over and above the online version, Isolezwe is also actively engaged on Twitter and Facebook which are the two most popular social networking sites in South Africa. The platforms are strategically deployed for newsgathering and news dissemination purposes. This is a timely contribution to existing scholarship on the adoption of digital media by indigenous languages newspapers in South Africa in particular and Africa in general. The study also provides insights into understanding African language journalism in the context of the advancement of digital and communication technologies.

READER’S MOTIVATION AND BEHAVIOR TOWARD LECTURER’S DECISION IN CONSUMING MEDIA

Today print media face serious problem. Technology advances in communication and information sector has caused online media grow rapidly replacing the function of print media. The growth of online media caused some print media industries change their product into the online version, even some of them stop producing. This study aims to see the influence of online media towards the consumption of print media from the consumers’ point of view. This study was conducted in Institut Pertanian Bogor with 92 lecturers as respondents. Proportional random sampling technique was used in this study. Structural Equation Model based on SMART Partial Least Square v2.0 with four latent variables which were reader’s motivation, behavior of reading print media, behavior of reading online media, and media consumption decision were used in this study to analyze the data. The result of the analysis showed that (1) reader’s motivation directly had significant effect on reader’s consumption decision, (2)reader’s motivation directly had significant effect on behavior of reading print media, (3 )reader’s motivation had significant effect on behavior of reading online media, and (4) behavior of reading print media had insignificant effect on the media consumption decision (5) behavior of reading online media had insignificant effect on the media consumption decision.

Deep Inception-ResNet: A Novel Approach for Personalized Prediction of Cumulative Pregnancy Outcomes in Vitro Fertilization Treatment (IVF).

Infertility is one of the major causes of socioeconomic stress worldwide due to social stigma and stressful lifestyles. Despite technological advances, couples still undergo several IVF cycles for conceiving without knowing their true prognosis which is causing a huge social and medical impact, and the live birth rate continues to be relatively low (~ 25%). A prediction model that predicts IVF prognosis accurately considering the pre-treatment parameters before starting the IVF cycle will help clinicians and patients to make better-informed choices. In this study, clinical details of 2268 patients with 79 features who underwent IVF/ICSI procedure from January 2018 to December 2020, at the Center of IVF and Human Reproduction, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital were retrospectively collected. The machine learning model was developed considering features such as maternal age, number of IVF cycle, type of infertility, duration of infertility, AMH, indication for IVF, sperm type, BMI, embryo transfer, and β-hCG value at the end of a fresh cycle and/or one subsequent frozen embryo transfer cycle was selected as the measure of outcome. Compared to other classifiers, for an 80:20 train-test split with feature selection, the proposed Deep Inception-Residual Network architecture-based neural network gave the best accuracy (76%) and ROC-AUC score of 0.80. For tabular datasets, the applied approach has remained unexplored in previously made studies for reproductive health. This model is the starting point for providing a personalized prediction of a successful outcome for an infertile couple before they enter the IVF procedure. The abstract prepared for the online version is the following: Nano and microstructured surfaces have been developed by Nature for many different purposes, and have, in turn, inspired a number of current commercial products. However, there is still a great deal of research that needs to be accomplished in this field, from studying the structuring possibilities of new materials to achieving new structures and functionalities for old materials.As a subset of patterning technologies, non-traditional patterning approaches that resort to interfacial instabilities and control of non-equilibrium processes is a very active field of research. In contrast to the existing “traditional” patterning approaches that are closely sustained on technological advances, these methods resort to the smart use of properties inherent to the materials to achieve a control on the surface characteristics. Several of these methodologies, which constitute the central subject of this book, are briefly described in this chapter.

Members of JPT's editorial committees play a vital role in producing the magazine each month. These volunteers, experts in their fields, help ensure that JPT is publishing the best in innovative, high-interest technical information and covering a broad spectrum of technological advances and applications. The JPT Editorial Committee, under current Chairperson Ed May of Schlumberger, selects the technical papers that are showcased each month in JPT. The 36-member committee—representing operators, service companies, and academia from around the world—reviews papers prepared for presentation at SPE conferences and chooses papers appropriate for publication. JPT staff editors then prepare 2-page summaries of the papers for publication in JPT, and the full paper is offered free online to SPE members for 2 months at www.spe.org/jpt. New papers are posted online the first business day of each month. Last year, the committee evaluated 2,216 SPE papers, choosing 120 to feature in JPT. The papers spanned 36 different technical categories, three to four of which are spotlighted in each issue of JPT. Photos and company affiliations of the current members of the committee also are available on the website. The committee seeks to identify high-interest, broad-based, practical papers for publication applicable to the technical themes most dominant in the oil and gas industry and of interest to the Society's members. Reviewers also attempt to ensure that JPT is publishing papers that represent the industry's geographical and corporate diversity. They write introductions to each technical topic featured in the magazine, pointing out developments and trends in the field. Suggestions for additional reading are listed for those wanting more information beyond the papers selected. JPT began featuring condensed papers in a variety of technical topics—with the complete papers available online—several years ago, and JPT reader surveys show that members are quite pleased with the current system. The JPT Special Series Committee develops topics and selects authors to prepare articles for the Distinguished Author Series and Technology Today Series articles published in the magazine. The Distinguished Author Series articles, written by individuals recognized as experts in a particular technical area, are general, descriptive summaries of the state of the art in a specific technology, particularly for readers who are not experts in that area. Technology Today Series articles are concise treatments of a narrow segment of technology that illustrate and explain technological concepts or advances. The committee invites authors to prepare manuscripts on specific topics. Each article undergoes technical review by members of the committee. The 12-member committee, under the leadership of Chairperson Ali Dogru of Saudi Aramco, has worked with authors to prepare four papers for publication so far this year, with five papers in various stages of the review/revision process, and another 34 papers have been invited. This is in contrast with the more formal peer-review process that takes place in advance of publication in SPE's technical journals—SPE Drilling & Completion; SPE Production & Operations; SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering; SPE Projects, Facilities & Construction; and SPE Journal. SPE Projects, Facilities & Construction—which contains papers on design and operation of surface facilities and project management of onshore and offshore facilities—is the newest technical journal, having debuted in March. Two of SPE's technical journals have been released in online versions. SPE Production & Operations and SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering became available online in late February. Other journals will be online soon. The online versions of the journals offer the same content as the paper versions, plus free retrieval of back issues using keyword searches, online discussions, and access to recent SPE papers on topics covered by the journal. A free preview is available of all the technical journals online at www.spe.org.

Content and demographic discrepancies that exist between women's fashion magazines and their corresponding websites

Introduction: The digitization of women’s fashion magazines is an on-going development in recent years. The rise of fashion bloggers and online-only fashion publications on the internet have forced major print publications to develop and expand their companion websites. Over the last decade, sales of print fashion magazines have steadily declined, while costs of printing have steadily risen. As a result, major publications have looked towards the cheaper alternative of developing websites in order to deliver digital content to their readers and further establish a strong presence online. By utilizing such digital platforms, women’s fashion publications have found a way to reach large audiences with generally free and easily accessible content that is produced with a high frequency. With a secondary medium of digital fashion magazines complimenting their original print publications, discrepancies in content between print and digital platforms emerge. Several factors play a part in the discrepancy between print and digital content. One of the primary factors, suggested by researcher Ytre-Anne is the way in which older audiences prefer physical print editions of magazines over newer digital alternatives (Ytre-Anne 2011). This factor may cause print fashion magazines to specifically cater towards an older demographic in order to maintain or increase sales. Furthermore, as the development of the internet and the rise of fashion blogs in the late 1990s into the new millennium worked to target younger audiences who were familiar with technological advancements, it may be argued that a younger readership may be the target of online publications (Magee 2012, Turner 2009). Similarly, other studies have shown that younger audiences prefer fashion products to be featured on, or endorsed by celebrities, pointing towards the idea that a younger audience prefers content with celebrity news or features. Other factors that might indicate discrepancies in content are product price ranges, with lower priced ready-to-wear fashion featured more frequently online. Alongside such differences in content, several technical features can also cause differences in content. As the internet allows for instant updates on the latest news and fashion, magazine websites are now outputting content on a daily basis as opposed to their print counterparts who typically produce editions on a monthly basis. This phenomenon can ultimately lead to differences in content between the print and online versions of a fashion magazine. My Major Research Project will seek to identify key developments and patterns that might derive from discrepancies in content between women’s fashion magazines’ print editions and their corresponding websites. Using a primarily qualitative approach, my research study will include a content analysis of four North American women’s fashion magazines and a series of interviews with corresponding fashion editors. The content analysis will look for several characteristics present in each fashion magazine’s print edition and its corresponding website, including product pricing, demographic target, as well as celebrity references. The content analysis will further work to compare data between each fashion magazine’s print edition and its corresponding website. In order to further my evidence I will conduct interviews with fashion magazine editors to gain a professional perspective on the subject. The interview portion of this research study will work to provide professional opinion on the subject of content and demographic discrepancies between print fashion magazines and their corresponding websites. Overall, I am interested in the topic of content discrepancies between published print fashion magazines versus their corresponding websites. My aim is not to argue for or against one medium, but instead to look at the implications that might result from content discrepancies between the two mediums. Finally, I hypothesize two primary results: (1) that there are discrepancy patterns in content between a fashion magazine’s print edition and its website, and (2) these discrepancies suggest a difference in demographics, in which online formats target a younger audience and print versions aim to appeal to an older demographic. These findings will work to illuminate key patterns in the fashion publishing industry in terms of content and demographic discrepancies found between online and print versions. As little research has been conducted in this area, it will act as a starting point for future research to explore these patterns more in depth. As digital fashion journalism is still a topic under development, this study will contribute towards a larger goal of conceptualizing digital journalism more broadly. Fabrication of paper-based analytical devices using a PLA 3D-printed stencil for electrochemical determination of chloroquine and escitalopram.

In recent years, the use of prescribed and non-prescribed drugs has increased. Therefore, advances in new technologies and sensors for detecting molecules in natural environments are required. In this work, a 3D-printed polylactic acid stencil is used to fabricate paper-based analytical devices (ePADs). Herein, we report the use of carbon-based lab-manufactured conductive ink for the fabrication of sensors towards the detection of chloroquine and escitalopram. For each batch, eight ePADs were successfully fabricated. Firstly, the fabricated sensors were evaluated morphologically by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments. The sensors displayed a well-defined voltammetric profile in the presence of the redox couple, when compared to a commercial carbon screen-printed electrode. Differential pulse voltammetry conducted the detection of chloroquine and escitalopram with detection limits of 4.0 and 0.5 µmol L−1, respectively. The ePADs fabricated using the 3D stencil are here presented as alternatives for the fabrication of electrochemical analytical devices.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10008-021-05075-w.

Bridging the Web and Digital Publishing

Although using advanced Web technologies at their core, e-books represent a parallel universe to everyday Web documents. Their production workflows, user interfaces, their security, access, or privacy models, etc, are all distinct. There is a lack of a vision on how to unify Digital Publishing and the Web. Conceptually, what is important is the *content* for Web documents that should be unique. Whether that content is portable (offline) or online should merely be a particular *state* at a point it time and it should be easy for the user to provide a portable state of the same document, synchronize it with the online version when possible, etc. To achieve this vision the community has to define a general, portable Web document format based on current Web technologies. EPUB3 has already made a huge step in this direction. But technical challenges remain. This includes the usage of a general packaging format both to Web browsers and ebooks; unification of security, privacy, and access control models; general and portable annotation systems; defining general linking and anchoring structures. This presentation will outline the vision and address some of the relevant technical issues: the goal is to set a direction for a work that the overall Web and publishing community has to solve jointly.

From The New Editors We are very excited about assumingthe editorship for theRockyMountain Review ofLanguage andLiterature and look forward to continuing the tradition of solid scholarship established by the previous editorial staff. Above all, we are committed to producing a journal which both reflects the needs and interests ofthe diverse membership ofthe Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association and which serves as a public statement to others in academia of our mission and our interests. To meet these goals, we have decided to make a few changes in the Review. First, we will expand the number articles published in each edition and will select articles written in English which appeal to a broad readership and maintain the scholarly integrity of the journal. Secondly, beginning in Fall 1998, each Fall issue of the Review will focus on a specific theme. This thematic focus will provide a forum in which the interplay ofmultiple perspectives - genre, gender, literary, and extraliterary, philological, et al. - can take place. A call for submissions on specific issues is included separately. To accommodate this change in focus, creative writing will play a smaller role in the scope ofthejournal. We will also be expanding the range of the current book review section to include reviews of other kinds of publications and of scholarly and pedagogical materials. We intend to continue offering primarily reviews of new books published by the scholarly presses but will also be reviewing software (learning tools and modules, development applications, etc.), videos and video series, web sites, and other multimedia resources which seem to us potentially of value to teachers and scholars in languages and literatures. Finally, in light of current technological advances which have an impact on all disciplines, we will publish an online version of the Review, The ?-Review, beginning in Spring 1998, on the new RMMLA site on the World Wide Web (http://rmmla.wsu.edu/ rmmla). The editorial policy regarding referees will be the same as for the print version but this electronic format will allow us to post publications more expediently than in print. We will also be able to provide greater access for our membership to a larger number of publications, some incorporating multimedia, as well as an archive of past articles. In The ?-Review, we will publish articles written in English and in other languages. For the time being, we will continue publishing both print and on-line versions ofthejournal, but we see the on-line version as becoming a dynamic space in which to access and respond to the scholarly endeavors of our members. Enhancing Online Speech and Language Assessment: Item Development for the Remote Adult Language Experiment (ReAL-E) Tool

Purpose: Recent technological advancements in psychology have yielded multiple unsupervised online tools for measuring cognitive skills. However, these tools do not measure key features of communication abilities in adults, such as productive speech or oral language. To address this gap, we developed the Remote Adult Language Experiment (ReAL-E) using a three-step approach that incorporates domain identification, expert evaluation, and piloting testing. Method: Step 1 focused on domain and task identification by collaborating with experts and reviewing the literature. Step 2 included two rounds of evaluation by content and lay experts to assess the initial tool design, identify areas for refinement, and solicit feedback for desired features. Step 3 involved piloting the tool in a sample of adults recruited online.Results: The ReAL-E tool adapted three speech planning and production tasks and four oral and written language tasks into online versions. Feedback from content and lay experts led to significant improvements, including enhanced task instructions, presentation modifications, and the incorporation of features to address potential confounds. Pilot testing demonstrated that adults perform within expected ranges, and five out of seven tasks had good to excellent preliminary reliability.Conclusion: The development of the ReAL-E tool contributes to the field by offering a scalable, efficient method for assessing a broad range of communication skills in adults, paving the way for future research and clinical applications in developmental communication disorders. Our study underscores the collaborative effort and innovative approach required for creating a digital assessment tool that promises to expand research capabilities and improve diagnostic processes in the discipline.

Universal basic income (UBI) has been proposed as a policy response to technological advances and structural inequality. Yet, recent data show that most conservatives in Europe and the US are strongly opposed to the welfare proposal. Can framing UBI as a policy that conforms to their ideological predispositions overcome such opposition? Exploiting the compatibility of UBI with core conservative ideals such as individualism and laissez-faire government, I design an original survey experiment that randomly exposes respondents to one of two frames: (1) an equalizing-opportunity frame which emphasizes that UBI creates a level playing field and promotes self-responsibility, or (2) a limiting-government frame which highlights UBI as a policy that limits government and reduces bureaucracy. I find that American conservatives—identified by using 10 policy statements—remained strongly opposed to UBI even after they were presented with such frames. Analyses of open-ended responses, which show that how conservatives explained their opposition to UBI remained unchanged regardless of framing, reinforce this conclusion. Conservatives’ opposition to UBI remained rigid, even after the key components of UBI that fit the conservative ideology were accentuated.
