Abstract

Following the break-up of the former federal state of Yugoslavia, the already decentralized media system was readily converted into several self-contained units in the new republics. Partly, but not only, because of the political and economic crises, these new media systems fell almost totally into the hands of new governments and political elites and have been used for propaganda and control. In practice, there is no more freedom than in the days of one-party dominance and some benefits of the wider communication space and journalistic rights and autonomy have been lost. The prospect for diverse and open media in the new post-Communist orders is poor and uncertain.
