Abstract

The martensitic transformation and superelasticity of Au7Cu5Al4 shape memory alloy were investigated. Polycrystalline Au7Cu5Al4 microwires with a diameter of 20–120 μm were fabricated using a melt-extraction technique. The brittle failure of microwires with an oligocrystalline structure obtained by cyclic heat treatment was significantly suppressed. Such microwires exhibited a recoverable strain of 5.6% under 6.8% applied strain at 90 °C. Stable superelastic behavior with complete shape recovery was observed up to 119 °C under 1.8% applied strain.
