Remember the 1950s? The years when the US was preoccupied with fighting the red menace. The years when few girls went to university. And most of those who did were in Arts, working for what was often called an MRS degree. As Betty Friedan pointed out in the book that also exposed the problem with no name, virtually no women studied science.
