This study examines how philosophy is practiced within the context of Islamic higher education by mapping the theories, methodologies, and approaches found in undergraduate theses at the Faculty of Ushuluddin, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The research aims to provide an overview of how students engage with classical and contemporary philosophical frameworks to address issues such as globalization, modernity, and pluralism. Adopting a qualitative descriptive design, this study analyzes a corpus of student theses to identify dominant theoretical orientations and methodological tendencies. The findings reveal that Islamic epistemology, ethics, and metaphysics are the most frequently applied theoretical domains. Methodologically, textual analysis and doctrinal approaches dominate, while comparative and hermeneutical methods appear as complementary strategies. Other approaches, including historical, socio-cultural, and ethnographic perspectives, are less common, yet normative-philosophical analysis remains the most prevalent overall. These results suggest that while students demonstrate awareness of contemporary challenges, their engagement is mediated through traditional Islamic philosophical frameworks. This study contributes to discussions on philosophy pedagogy in Islamic higher education and highlights the need for broader methodological diversity to respond effectively to current intellectual and societal issues.

UIN Jakarta, with its distinct characteristics, focuses on integrating Islamic and general education as a unity. This research focuses on the oldest faculty: The Faculty of Educational Sciences (FITK, hereafter). This study aims to a) explore the concept of integration of Islamic and general education at FITK, and b) find out the extent to which lecturers at FITK understand the concept of integration. The approach used in this research was phenomenology. It employed the qualitative method to describe the concept of integration of Islamic and general education and reveal the extent of lecturers' understanding of scientific integration. The results showed that at the conceptual level, the paradigm of reintegration of Islamic and general education is an integration of Islamic knowledge and values, which is two-way: from secular sciences to Islamic values and from conventional Islamic religious materials to secular sciences. The study also found that scientific integration has long been present in the FITK academic environment. However, the concept of scientific integration itself does not appear to be a uniformity which causes many different interpretations from each study program, even from lecturers in the FITK environment. In addition, the concept of scientific integration has not been fully understood by each leader in the academic community of UIN Jakarta, mainly due to the lack of socialization and no appointment for specific institutions responsible for managing this integration process.

  • Lukman Raimi

Purpose This study addresses the question of whether Islamic epistemology and ethics advance the understanding and promotion of sustainable development (SD) in the field of Islamic management, economics and finance (IMEF). This study also aims to understand how contemporary ethical theories explain and harmonise Islamic ethics in the context of SD. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts the PRISMA protocol and conducts a systematic literature review of 62 articles published from 2015 to 2023 to provide answers to four research questions. The selected publications were taken from the Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases, using the purposive sampling technique, and taking into account the selection criteria of quality, relevance and timeliness of the publications. Findings Four key findings emerged from the review. Firstly, Islamic epistemology and ethics, drawn from the Qur’an and Hadith, guide practices toward SD. Secondly, Islamic epistemology and ethics promote SD through various initiatives, including ethical behaviour, environmental stewardship, social responsibility, Islamic banking and financing ethics and Islamic social financing principles among others. Third, contemporary ethical theories such as virtue ethics, intentionalism, consequentialism and deontological ethics enrich the application of Islamic ethical foundations in the context of SD. Finally, the theoretical connection between Islamic epistemology, ethics and SD lies in their alignment toward promoting ethical behaviour, social responsibility and holistic ecosystem well-being. Practical implications The insights provided by this review offer practical implications for researchers, policymakers and practitioners in IMEF. The insights also underscore the importance of integrating Islamic ethical principles into SD initiatives and policy frameworks. Originality/value This novel study offers unique perspectives by integrating contemporary ethical theories with Islamic ethics and epistemology to justify SD in ways that are both theoretically and practically significant. In addition, six novel propositions are suggested for future research in IMEF.

The research focuses on aligning ethical values derived from Islamic teachings with modern educational practices, offering a transformative framework that contributes to global sustainability goals. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating ethical principles, such as justice (adl), beneficence (ihsan), and accountability (amanah), into curriculum design to foster responsible global citizens. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework combines Islamic epistemological principles with the humanistic educational model, illustrating how ethical dimensions can shape pedagogy, learning outcomes, and societal impact. Literature Review: The literature review highlights the convergence of ethical frameworks in Islamic education with contemporary educational theories. Key references include works on Islamic epistemology, ethics, and SDG-related educational initiatives. This review identifies gaps in current curriculum models that fail to emphasize ethical values as foundational elements. Methods: A qualitative research method was employed, involving content analysis of Islamic epistemological texts, curriculum policies, and case studies from Islamic educational institutions. Data were gathered through document analysis and interviews with curriculum experts, educators, and policymakers. Results: The findings reveal that integrating Islamic epistemology into curriculum development fosters holistic education, bridging spiritual, intellectual, and social dimensions. Such integration enhances moral responsibility, critical thinking, and sustainable practices among learners. Implications: The implications of this study are significant for policymakers and educators seeking to design curricula that align with SDG principles. By emphasizing ethical values, the proposed framework promotes inclusivity, environmental stewardship, and social justice, directly contributing to Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). Novelty: The study's novelty lies in offering a structured approach to ethical curriculum development grounded in Islamic epistemology, addressing both spiritual and material dimensions of education. It advocates for a paradigm shift where ethics is not merely an addition but a core component of curriculum design.

The pandemic started to hit the world in 2019, making the education system unable to run face-to-face as usual. Islam views this pandemic as something to avoid. Therefore, people were demanded to stay at home. The same thing happened in the world of education, especially in the learning system which was previously changed to an online system (blended learning). Teachers anticipated this system by using several existing media, such as: Zoom, Meet, Google Classroom, and other applications. The purpose of writing this article was to discuss Islamic institutions in dealing with a pandemic in the realm of education for the common good. This study was included in the type of descriptive qualitative study using mixed methods with a questionnaire instrument basis to obtain data and description for data analysis. The data was a questionnaire form and several arguments used as the basis for the analysis in this study. The data was correlated with the education system in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic by observing t the final grades of the Indonesian language course for non-language students at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The results show that Islamic law recommends the best efforts to deal with a pandemic. Although UIN Jakarta as an Islamic institution does not seem ready, it is still able to prove resilience in various ways. One of which is optimizing the use of the Academic Information System (AIS) and subscribing to premium zoom for all lecturers. The results of student learning tests using the online method are classified as good from the specified targets. However, significant differences in scores still occur and are quite visible between face-to-face learning and online learning systems.

A Multidimensional Qualitative Approach: Synthesizing Western and Islamic Research Paradigms
  • Dec 8, 2025
  • El-Rusyd
  • Abdul Rahman + 3 more

This study aims to present a comprehensive synthesis of four major qualitative research approaches narrative inquiry, phenomenology, grounded theory, and Islamic research design as a multidimensional framework for studying phenomena in Islamic education. Narrative inquiry emphasizes the reconstruction of life stories as sources of meaning; phenomenology seeks to uncover the essence of participants’ lived experiences; grounded theory systematically generates concepts or theories emerging from empirical data; while Islamic research design integrates contemporary qualitative strategies with Islamic epistemology, ethics, and values. The analysis demonstrates that each approach offers distinctive strengths yet remains compatible for integrative use. Narrative inquiry supports studies requiring an exploration of individual life trajectories, phenomenology is suitable for examining spiritual and religious experiences in depth, grounded theory is relevant for developing contextually rooted theoretical constructs, and Islamic research design ensures that the research process aligns with Islamic ethical and epistemological foundations. Taken together, these approaches form a multidimensional qualitative model that enriches methodological discourse in Islamic studies and promotes research practices that are both contextually grounded and aligned with the needs of contemporary Muslim societies.

Transformation Of Islamic Education Learning Management: Integration Of Computer-Based Tests And Ethical Values Of Evaluation In Islamic Education
  • Dec 28, 2025
  • IJGIE (International Journal of Graduate of Islamic Education)
  • Rafika Nisa

The digital transformation of educational assessment has accelerated the adoption of Computer-Based Tests (CBT) in Islamic Religious Education (PAI). Although CBT improves efficiency and objectivity, it also raises concerns regarding students’ academic anxiety and the integration of Islamic ethical values in evaluation practices. This study aims to explore students’ experiences of academic anxiety during CBT implementation in PAI, identify technical, pedagogical, and ethical factors influencing anxiety, and examine how Islamic evaluation ethics are applied in computer-based assessments. Using a qualitative interpretive approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis involving PAI teachers, students, school leaders, and CBT operators in an Islamic educational institution. The findings indicate that CBT generates significant academic anxiety manifested in cognitive, emotional, and physiological responses, primarily due to technical uncertainty, rigid assessment design, and perceptions of limited tolerance for errors. Evaluation management remains largely technocratic, emphasizing system efficiency over students’ psychological well-being. Although educators demonstrate normative understanding of Islamic ethical principles—such as justice (al-‘adl), trustworthiness (amanah), compassion (rahmah), and public benefit (maslahah)—these values are not yet systematically integrated into CBT policies. Nevertheless, practices such as CBT simulations, spiritual reinforcement, transparent procedures, and technical support were found to reduce anxiety. The study concludes that integrating Islamic ethical values into CBT-based evaluation management is essential to creating fair, humane, and educational digital assessment in Islamic education

  • Md Ishaque + 1 more

Objective: This research explores the significance of Islamic family ethics as a foundational element in promoting social harmony in the modern era. The primary objective is to analyze how Islamic teachings address family-related challenges and foster moral values that strengthen societal cohesion. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework combines Islamic ethical teachings with sociological theories concerning family systems and social stability. Literature review: The literature review encompasses scholarly works in Islamic studies, sociology, and contemporary research on family dynamics, highlighting the relevance and timelessness of Islamic values in addressing emerging social issues. Methods: Utilizing a descriptive-analytical methodology, the study analyzes primary Islamic texts, academic research, institutional reports, and credible digital sources. Through thematic text analysis, the research identifies patterns and principles that illustrate how Islamic ethics provide practical solutions to modern familial challenges, such as individualism, generational disconnection, and moral decline. Results: The findings reveal that Islamic family ethics significantly contribute to social harmony by encouraging respect, mutual support, responsible parenting, and community awareness. These values create a stable family environment, which serves as the bedrock for a cohesive society. The research further demonstrates that integrating Islamic ethical teachings into family and community programs can help counteract the erosion of social bonds in an increasingly fragmented world. Implications: The study’s implications extend to policymakers, educators, and religious leaders who seek to reinforce ethical and familial foundations in society. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its contextual linkage of traditional Islamic values with contemporary societal issues, offering a faith-based, yet universally applicable, framework for strengthening family structures and enhancing social harmony in a globalized era.

  • Nur Annisa Fitria + 2 more

This study aims to explore the extent to which the principle of gender equality has been integrated in Islamic Religious Education textbooks at the elementary school level. The focus of the analysis is on the representation of the roles of men and women in the teaching materials used in the independent curriculum. The main data in this study are six Islamic Religious Education and Budi Pekerti textbooks for Grades 1 to 6, published by the Center for Curriculum and Bookkeeping, Research and Development, and Bookkeeping Agency, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. These books include Islamic Religious Education and Ethics for Primary School Grade 1 by Muhammad Nurzakun and Joko Santoso in 2021, Islamic Religious Education and Ethics for Primary School Grade 2 by A. Zainal Abidin and Siti Kusrini in 2021, and Islamic Religious Education and Ethics for Primary School Grade 3 by Moh. Ghozali and Erwin Wasti in 2022, the book Islamic Religious Education and Ethics for Primary 4 by Ahmad Faozan and Jamaluddin in 2021, the book Islamic Religious Education and Ethics for Primary 5 by Soleh Baedowi and Hairil Muhammad Anwar in 2021, and the book Islamic Religious Education and Ethics for Primary 6 by Nazirwan and Kholili Abdullah in 2022. This research uses a qualitative method with content analysis of the text and illustrations of Islamic Religious Education textbooks. The results of this study show a consistent pattern of gender bias, where male characters are dominant in religious and social roles, while female characters tend to be passive and limited to domestic roles. So then it is necessary to reformulate the content of the textbook to be more responsive to gender, in order to realize a fair Islamic education in accordance with the value of rahmatan lil 'alamin.
