Abstract

In the light of Mao’s methodology and point of departure, we shall now reconstruct (through our own method of reflective synthesis) and present Mao’s theory of dialectic per se. Since it is a philosophical inquiry, we shall try to make it as objective as possible by basing it almost exclusively on Mao’s own texts,1 while reserving our own critical evaluation for later. Mao’s theory of dialectic comprises three main ‘moments’: ‘universality’, ‘particularity’ and ‘dialectic’. But before presenting these three moments, we must discuss Mao’s key concept, ‘contradiction’ as a philosophical term, which is both the foundation and center of his entire theory of dialectic. Thus, our discussion is divided into four sections: (1) the concept of contradiction, (2) the universality of contradiction, (3) the particularity of contradiction, and (4) the dialectic of contradiction.
