Manufacturing Supply Chain Resilience Amid Global Value Chain Reconfiguration: An Enhanced Bibliometric–Systematic Literature Review

Global Value Chains (GVCs) have driven the worldwide dispersion of manufacturing but remain highly vulnerable to macro-level shocks, including financial crises, geopolitical tensions, and the COVID-19 pandemic. These shocks expose manufacturing supply chains (MSCs) to systemic risks, but limited research has explored how GVC reconfiguration mediates their impact on manufacturing supply chain resilience (MSCR). To address this gap, this study conducts an enhanced bibliometric–systematic literature review (B-SLR) of 120 peer-reviewed articles. The findings reveal that macro-level shocks induce GVC reconfigurations along geographical, value, and governance dimensions, which in turn trigger MSCR through node- and link-level mechanisms. MSCR represents a manufacturer-centered capability that enables MSCs to preserve, realign, and enhance value amid shocks. Building on these insights, this research proposes a multi-tier strategy encompassing firm-level practices, inter-firm collaborations, and policy interventions. This study outlines three key contributions. First, at the theoretical level, it embeds MSCR within a GVC framework, clarifying how GVC reconfiguration mediates SCR under macro-level shocks. Second, at the methodological level, it ensures corpus completeness through snowballing and refines bibliometric mapping with multi-dimensional visualization. Third, at the managerial level, it provides actionable guidance for firms, industry alliances, and policymakers to align MSCR strategies with the dynamics of global production networks.

Matching Sourcing Destination with Fashion Brands' Business Model: Comparative Advantages of Bangladesh and Vietnam Apparel Industries

This study investigated the comparative advantages of the Bangladeshi andVietnamese apparel industries using Global Value Chain (GVC) framework. In thisstudy, the GVC framework was expanded to include social and environmentalsustainability issues. Secondary data, for the 2012 - 2013 period, were collected andanalyzed for each component of the apparel GVC. The findings indicated that whileboth countries have unique comparative advantages, Vietnam clearly emerged as aleader on many GVC components. Bangladesh’s comparative advantage lies in lowerwages, producing high volume orders, and lean manufacturing. In spite of Vietnam’shigher labor costs, it has comparative advantages in higher productivity, skilled andtrained workers, manufacturing of intricate styles of high quality, agility and flexiblemanufacturing, more developed infrastructure and logistic services as well as greatersocial and environmental compliances. This study contributes towards insight intobest sourcing fit for fashion brand business models. Based on the findings, fashiondriven companies offering more complex styles at a faster rate will benefit fromchoosing Vietnam. In contrast, Bangladesh might be a better choice for high volumedriven companies that offer basic apparel and better value for their consumers. Fromtheoretical perspective, the research makes an important contribution by expandingthe GVC framework.

Regional Competitiveness in the Latin America Offshore Services Value Chain

This chapter analyzes Latin America’s participation in the offshore services industry and its contribution to global service trade by using the global value chain (GVC) framework. It examines the structure of the industry, the business models driving the lead firms in the sector, and favorable factors of its different countries. The GVC framework allows one to understand how this global industry is organized by examining the structure and dynamics of different actors involved. This framework is also a useful tool to trace the shifting patterns of global demand and supply, to link geographically dispersed activities and actors, and to determine the roles they play in developed and developing countries alike. The GVC methodology focuses on the sequences of value-added within an industry, from conception to production and end use. It examines the job descriptions, technologies, standards, regulations, products, processes, and markets in specific industries and places, thus providing a holistic view of this global industry from both the top down and the bottom up, and facilitates an understanding for firms and policy makers in developing countries to drive growth.

Toward a future discourse on global value chains

PurposeThe discourse on global value chains (GVC) is undergoing a transformation in terms of its conceptualisation, theorisation and pragmatic applications. Today, the production systems have become more complex as global economic order continues to witness marked geo-economic manoeuvring. Thus, the direction of discourse on GVC ought to move from mere theoretical propositions toward becoming more evidence based. There have been recent studies that have used the governance and upgrading propositions by Gary Gereffi and others to seek quantitative evidence. This study aims to decipher the quantitative discourse on GVC and to set the emerging and future research agenda.Design/methodology/approachThrough a systematic literature review, the authors first analyse the quantitative studies on GVC carried out during the last two decades. The authors then outline a future research agenda and examine a few relevant modelling techniques that could potentially be used to solicit newer evidence in GVC research.FindingsThe authors categorise the quantitative discourse on GVC into three crucial themes, namely, GVC framework, GVC participation and position, environmental aspects and regionalisation in GVC. The most commonly used quantitative techniques are gravity model, panel data estimation, structural decomposition analysis and computable general equilibrium modelling.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the GVC discourse in two ways. Firstly, the authors argue that the theoretical frameworks within the GVC discourse should be complemented by evidence-based quantitative studies. Secondly, the authors suggest potential modelling techniques that can be used on the emerging and future research agenda.

Applying the GVC framework to policy: The ILO experience

Understanding global value chains (GVC), their power dynamics, and their opportunities and challenges for developing countries is a key policy priority for development. The analytical framework developed by Gary Gereffi has increasingly been embedded in policy-making at the multilateral level. This article homes in on the relevance of the GVC framework for policies and interventions of the International Labour Organization, the United Nations’ agency for labour rights and decent work. By reviewing the introduction of the GVC framework at the ILO in the past quarter of a century, I highlight how it has supported the ILO in understanding labour governance dynamics in the wake of globalisation, and in particular the rise of private compliance initiatives led by GVC lead firms. I also show how the ILO is using the GVC framework to map the most vulnerable segments of the production chain from a workers’ right perspective, and to develop targeted interventions to achieve decent work in GVCs.

Russia and the Netherlands: Trade cooperation within the global value chains framework

Russia and the Netherlands are crucial trading partners for each other and those countries have enduring trade history, during which there were both periods of “cooling” and “thawing” in trade and investment. Against the background of a global decline in trade and FDI flows, the issue of global production and global value chains (GVCs) cooperation, in particular Russian-Dutch cooperation, is becoming more relevant. Thus, this study aims to determine current trends and features of trade cooperation between Russia and the Netherlands using the decomposition of gross value added (VA) flows, since the analysis of trade in terms of GVCs allows one to more accurately determine the directions and structure of international trade. This issue becomes especially urgent in context of the international production fragmentation slowing down since GVCs, among other things, more accurately illustrate trade and production ties and the interdependence of the world’s economies. The article will consider the general characteristics of trade relations between Russia and the Netherlands in terms of gross trade indicators, determine the place of Russia and the Netherlands in the ranking of their trading partners, show the dynamics of trade and FDI, and also identify the main areas of cooperation between Russia and the Netherlands within the GVC framework with the help of sectoral analysis of VA trade. As a result of the analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that Russia and the Netherlands, firstly, are involved to varying degrees in GVCs, secondly, they participate in opposite directions within GVC flows, which is why they do not equally benefit from participation in global production, thirdly, mutual trade within the framework of the GVC is “one-sided” and unbalanced, and, fourthly, the export and industrial production of the Netherlands relies on Russian intermediate goods in a bigger extent than Russian exporting industries relies on the Dutch once.

There are already numerous opinions and forecasts about what the world economy will look like in the nearest future, in the wake of a post-pandemic period. The global world is facing now а social and economic crisis, never experienced before, the COVID-19 pandemic became a very significant trigger changing the way the world production was conducted in the previous era. In these conditions, large and small businesses are trying to cooperate with each other within the Global Value chains framework, to survive. As the main drivers of global production and financial systems, large corporations had to improve, but it is still difficult to say how long it will take. On the other side, after the pandemic recession, it is becoming more and more obvious that SME sector has increased its impact not only within the national economies, but also in a global scale. A huge amount of financial and institutional support is being provided to the SME sector by the governments, which eventually will lead to an improvement in the International Capital Reproduction System. However, there is still a gap in existing connections within the global value chains, which makes a big challenge for this integration process to be achieved. Although many aspects of globalization are now clearly understood, still there is scarce information on the transforming relations between large companies and their partners - smaller firms and the ways the formers integrate into the Global Value Chains. This study aims to define the evolution of the role of SMEs in the global value chains, identify and assess the factors that contribute to the integration of SMEs into global value chains and explore the impact of GVC onto their institutional framework.

Abstract. During the last few years, international and domestic supply chains have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and this has resulted in serious disruptions in companies’ global value chains (GVCs). This chapter explores the motivations and actions made in global apparel industry value chains during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the post-pandemic business environment. The study has been provoked by ongoing discussions and expectations of the regionalization of global value chains (GVCs) which should occur as a consequence of the challenges and issues caused by the pandemic. The primary aim of this chapter is to provide empirical evidence on the reconfiguration of GVCs, particularly the changes in buyer-supplier relations in the global apparel industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. The business news media serves as empirical data for the conclusion, that decisions and actions in the apparel industry GVCs are mostly short-term reactions to the supply issues that occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent geopolitical shock caused by the war in Ukrain

A Systematic Literature Review of Cultured Meat Through the Conceptual Frameworks of the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and Global Value Chain

Cultured meat (CM) is currently experiencing a surge in popularity, primarily due to its promise to produce animal-based products with a lower environmental impact and a higher level of animal welfare. Although CM production remains limited and lacks pre-market approval (except for Singapore and the USA), recent technological advancements have been notable. A greater number of stakeholders, including biotechnology companies, start-ups, private investors, NGOs and big agrifood companies, are entering the CM value chain. This paper aims to aggregate, synthesize, and analyze existing studies on the CM value chain to highlight the characteristics, methodologies, and topics they address. Our secondary purpose is to analyze elements emerging in terms of global value chain dynamics. To do so, this study applies a conceptual framework based on the interplay of the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and global value chain frameworks. This systematic literature review identifies 43 studies and shows that the most addressed topics are regulations on pre-market approval and labelling, technological progress, the use of patents, the availability and sources of funding, and actors’ roles in the CM market. The analysis and discussion of these findings highlight key aspects of the CM global value chain and present further areas of research to investigate the governance of the chain.

Globalization has given rise to a new era of international competition that is best understood by looking at the global organization of industries and how countries rise and fall within these industries. The global value chains framework has evolved from its academic origins to become a major paradigm used by a wide range of international organizations, such as the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, the International Labor Organization, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Global value chains highlight how new patterns of international trade, production, and employment shape the prospects for development and competitiveness, using core concepts like “governance” and “upgrading.” This article illustrates the use of this framework by contrasting the industrial upgrading experiences of China and Mexico, through which China has wrested market share from Mexico in a diverse spectrum of U.S. product markets en route to becoming a dominant global manufacturing power in just a couple of decades. The future of international competition will reflect the consolidation and resilience of global value chains and the determination of emerging economies to continue to upgrade to higher value goods and services within these chains, with a growing emphasis on domestic and regional markets.

Determinants of SME integration into global value chains

PurposeIn recent years, due to intense competition, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are unable to meet performance expectations and find difficulty in fulfilling the needs of the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Consequently, the growth of the SMEs has slowed down considerably. Constrained by their infrastructural resources, SMEs’ participation in global value chains (GVCs) has the potential to bring significant benefits, such as enhancing technological learning and innovation and generating positive contributions to the development of the SMEs. The purpose of this paper is to explore competitive priorities, key factors, and causal relationships influencing SMEs to enter GVCs.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the GVC framework is adopted and qualitative feedback loop analysis is used to identify the key factors influencing the competitive factors. A questionnaire survey was carried out with the automotive component manufacturers of a transnational corporation in India.FindingsThe survey in the automotive component manufacturing industry reveals product quality standards as the most important priority for joining global production networks, followed by price competitiveness, timely delivery, innovativeness, manufacturing flexibility, service, and dependability. The qualitative findings reveal continuous personnel training, capacity expansion, research development, and others as key factors influencing competitiveness.Practical implicationsTo retain SMEs’ role in economic development and to accelerate the growth of global production networks in India, thereby realizing opportunities from the emerging GVCs, support is needed for SMEs regarding the aspects identified in this study.Originality/valueThe study explores the dynamics of each competitive priority of SMEs in Indian automotive component manufacturing industry to enter the GVCs. No study has explored the dynamics of SMEs competitiveness to enter GVCs in the automotive manufacturing industry.
