Abstract

The manufacture of diamond impregnated tools involves (a) mixing of diamond crystals and metal powder to ensure a random distribution of crystals, (b) cold pressing for easier handling when loading the mould, (c) sintering to form the final tool shape. The type of metal matrix used is crucial in determining the mechanical properties of the tools. Alloying elements can be added to vary the mechanical properties for specific applications, however this is done on an empirical basis as the exact wear mechanisms and bonding are not fully understood.
