Abstract

1. It was established that the difficulties encountered in the production of fine iron-silicon and iron-aluminum alloy powders by the atomization technique are linked with slagging of molten metal drops by oxides, which increase the viscosity of the liquid system being disintegrated. It is shown that performing atomization in an inert atmosphere increases the effectiveness of the metal disintegration process by protecting molten drops against intense oxidation and slagging by viscous oxides. 2. The experimental results obtained show that the viscosity properties of metallic melts play an important part in the energy balance of the atomization process. It is demonstrated that the total energy losses (Edisp+Ediss) in the atomization of iron and iron-silicon melts are similar.
