Abstract

As a major employer of people required to manually handle, and as a provider of care to low back pain sufferers, the costs to the NHS and social services of back injury arising from the workplace are high. The European Council (EC) Directive (1990) on manual handling aims to reduce-injury by ensuring a safe working environment in all manual handling operations. The recommendations, risk assessment, reduction of risk to the lowest possible level, manual handling training and monitoring are mandatory, and take an ergonomic perspective with the aim of promoting a healthier work place and workforce.
