Managing modesty through self-denigration in Omani online interaction

Religious and sociocultural values play a significant role in constructing a person’s self-identity and influencing their choices. This paper explores the religious and sociocultural values depicted in Akwaeke Emezi’s The Death of Vivek Oji (2020) and the impact of those values on Vivek's life decisions. Vivek's self-identity construction is highlighted, as well as how religious and sociocultural values influence his decisions and isolate him from the world of adults in favor of spending time with peers he trusts and who show more tolerance and openness toward his choices. Through a sociocultural and textual lens, this study traces Vivek's transformation, and how his lifestyle choices impact both his appearance and the discovery of himself. This paper outlines why the choices Vivek makes do not match the sociocultural and religious values of his community, which leads him to isolate himself and choose a life he prefers, away from his family and the world of adults. His choices lead him to a tragic end, with his bewildered mother finding her son dead, rolled in colorful fabric, at her front door. Vivek's disorienting blackouts distract his parents from recognizing the shifts taking place in their son's life, beginning with changes to his appearance: long hair, interest in makeup, and women's dresses. His parents find out after his death about the life Vivek led as a homosexual, which the religious and sociocultural values of the community could not appreciate or approve of.

Education is a fundamental pillar in building sustainable and competitive societies in the era of globalization. Amid the dynamics of social change, it is important for the education system to consider socio-cultural and religious values as a strong foundation in the learning process. This article aims to propose a community-based education approach that integrates socio-cultural and religious values as primary elements. This approach not only emphasizes the transfer of knowledge and skills but also the formation of strong character and deep understanding of the cultural identity of society. Using qualitative conceptual analysis and literature review methods, this research explores the relevance and urgency of education rooted in socio-cultural and religious values in the context of increasingly multicultural societies. In the process, this article presents implementation strategies that can be adopted, identifies potential challenges, and outlines the benefits that can be gained from the proposed education approach. It is hoped that the results of this research can provide deeper insights into the role of education in strengthening cultural identity and promoting social harmony in diverse societies

Most of the intolerance issues in Indonesia are due to the lack of a comprehensive understanding of the urgency of maintaining social diversity among different ethnicities and religious adherents. This study argues that the application of religious moderation by involving socio-cultural and religious values will be able to make religious moderation in line with the values faced by the local community. Therefore, the study formulates that the principles of socio-cultural and religious values will strengthen religious moderation at the level of education and the wider community because they have great relevance and impact on social development. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach in educational institutions in Bali which explains in detail the implementation of social and cultural-based religious moderation in educational institutions. The results of the study show that (1) the existence of religious moderation material based on social and cultural values is able to form agreements and shared understanding among students to care about tolerance and peaceful life in their environment. (2) Socio-cultural and religious values can be used as an enrichment of religious moderation material in schools and other educational institutions. The implications of the use of socio-cultural and religious values in the development of religious moderation are able to make religious moderation more actual and relevant to students' lives in responding to social issues and religious fundamentalism.

Current literature on employees’ work attitudes often fails to examine how employees’ specific sociocultural values influence work attitudes. This study of 211 bank managers examined specifically the cardinal sociocultural values (moral values, religious values, communal values, attitude toward others, and family values) within the Ghanaian society and how they influence job satisfaction. The study further tested the mediating role of social support on the relationship between sociocultural values and job satisfaction. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM)/partial least squares (PLS) to test for the relationships between sociocultural values (as the endogenous variable) and job satisfaction (as the exogenous variable) and the mediating role of social support. Based on the results, it is concluded that there exist a significant positive relationship between sociocultural values and job satisfaction. The strongest relationship observed is between moral values, religious values, and job satisfaction. Social support mediated the sociocultural values and job satisfaction relationships, sometimes fully and sometimes partially, depending on which specific sociocultural value was being examined. Theoretical and practical implications of the proposed research are discussed.

This study aims to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic elements of Tere Liye's novel "Selamat Tinggal" (Goodbye) and how it can be implemented as teaching material in high school. The objective approach focuses on the novel's intrinsic elements (theme, plot, characterization, setting, point of view, style, and moral), while the mimetic approach focuses on the novel's extrinsic elements (moral and religious values, social and cultural values) based on Abrams' theory (in Aminuddin 2015). The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The research data consists of dialogues sourced from the novel. Data collection used listening and note-taking techniques. The steps in data analysis included reading the entire novel, classifying the data, interpreting the data, and then identifying data related to the novel's intrinsic and extrinsic elements, including moral, religious, social, and cultural aspects. Based on the analysis, a total of 29 data points were found, 20 of which fall within the intrinsic elements of the novel using the objective approach, and 9 of which fall within the extrinsic elements using the mimetic approach. The research results can be implemented as teaching materials for critical analysis and assessment of literary works with the aim of understanding, appreciating, and providing a deeper understanding of literary works. The context of moral, religious, and socio-cultural values is expected to broaden the horizons of all educational elements to support the success and progress of education in line with intellectual intelligence and moral perfection, because learning is essentially a process of behavioral change that underlies literary criticism in Literature learning, particularly in phase F (grades XI and XII) of high school

This article discusses the influence of gadget use on the formation of religious education values ​​in schools. In today's digital era, the use of gadgets by students is increasingly widespread, which can have a significant impact on the learning process, including the formation of character and religious values. This study examines the positive and negative impacts of gadget use on students' understanding and appreciation of religious values ​​taught in schools. Through a qualitative approach and data analysis from observations and interviews with students, teachers, and parents, it was found that uncontrolled gadget use can distract students from religious education materials, affect their social attitudes, and reduce the quality of their interactions in a religious context. On the other hand, with proper utilization, gadgets can be an effective tool to support religious learning, such as through access to religious education applications and relevant digital materials. This article suggests the need for stricter regulations regarding the use of gadgets at home and the importance of the role of teachers and parents in providing guidance to students to use technology wisely in the context of forming religious education values.

Based on observations, qualitative content analysis and secondary sources, this paper critically examines the importance of nonverbal communication in the Nigerian mass media particularly in print advertising. Hinging principally on two theories (namely semiotics and structuralism theory), the paper argues that despite the fact that they are difficult to systematically be quantified in a mass communication context, nonverbal cues are very important parts to all media producers’ efforts to convey emotional, intellectual and informational meanings to audiences. In tandem with this, nonverbal communication cues actually pervade the Nigerian mass media production. The paper demonstrates this fact with illustrations from the Nigerian print advertising. It argues that in the Nigerian print advertising text, nonverbal communication is achieved through specific visual compositions and paralanguage. Print adverts often contain a mix of visuals which are/represent indexical or symbolic signs of positive attributes that advertisers seek to associate with the products or services on promotion. Various forms of paralanguage are equally deployed to suggest the benefits and gratification one may derive from consuming the product or using the services on promotion.

The values and morals of Western communities vary significantly across different eras, heavily influenced by socio-cultural and religious contexts. However, these values and morals can be abandoned or transformed over time due to various circumstances. The convictions and traditions rooted in socio-cultural and religious values often clash with the interests and beliefs of newer generations. This study examines two novels from different periods that have also been adapted into films due to the significance of their social context: Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (published in 1850) Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (published in 2005 and translated into English 2008). By exploring the historical context and the evolution of socio-cultural values, the study investigates how communities view their socio-cultural and religious legacies and their inclination to challenge or uphold these values. The study reveals that new generations often reject traditional socio-cultural and religious values, while earlier generations strive to maintain them. The older generations view the abandonment of these values and morals as a sin that brings disrepute to the individual within the community. This tension between maintaining traditional values and embracing new beliefs is a central theme in both novels.

Despite the existence of many studies on the identity of language learners in the offline settings, few focus on how English language learners in the expanding circle construct their identity through their use of English and their choices over their first language capital as they enjoy variations of multilinguacultural exposes in the digital space. To fill this gap, this study explores the voices of 267 Indonesian undergraduate students in negotiating their identity as English learners and users. Drawing on the poststructuralist approach and positioning theory of identity, this study shows how socio-cultural values and a hegemony that posits L1 users as the most rightful language model become sensitive factors affecting participants’ choices of languages, accent-preferences and desire to affiliate with diverse multilinguacultural persons in digital interactions. This article calls for the encouragement of translanguaging as discursive practice in the classrooms and beyond. Additionally, societal stigma on the existence and use of English which limits the identity options of Indonesian learners as users of English in the expanding circle should be responded strongly in digital interaction as well as offline encounters.

The results showed that the socio-cultural values of pappasang turiolo Makassar based on character were leadership values, honesty values, unity values, selfish values, and religious values. Based on the research findings, the writer hopes to contribute knowledge about culture and enrich existing research results and provide a clear picture of Pappasang Turiolo, especially the socio-cultural values contained in it, providing benefits from an explanation of Pappasang Turiolo to the community. As well as readers can take socio-cultural values which are a reflection of community life as a guide in life.

This study aims to determine how proud students of the Archipelagic Communication Studies Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Muhammadiyah University, Luwuk, face culture shock. The method used in this study is a mix method that combines descriptive qualitative and quantitative data analysis and the data sources are primary data and secondary data. While the sample and population amounted to 14 people using sampling techniques, namely observation, questionnaires and documentation. For data analysis in this study using qualitative descriptive data analysis techniques that use tables of distribution of respondents' responses which are then explained based on phenomena at the research site. The results showed that the respondents were able to pass the stage of culture shock well and showed the final percentage of 75.09%.

Our paper concerns the grammar of clause combining in Finnish and Japanese conversation. We consider the patterns of clause combining in our data and focus on the verbal and non-verbal cues which allow participants to determine whether, after the end of a clause-sized unit, the turn will end or continue with another clause-sized unit, resulting in a clause combination. We conclude that morphosyntax alone cannot account for the patterns found in our data, but that the participants orient to, at least, prosodic and nonverbal cues in determining the boundaries of clauses and projecting continuation in the form of another clause. Also important for projection are fixed expressions or ‘prefabs’. In addition, semantic and pragmatic factors play a role. In that sense, we explore the question of where the limits of grammar for interaction, understood as the knowledge which speakers share and which forms the basis for the creation and processing of novel utterances, should be drawn, and whether grammar should include, beyond morphosyntax, not only prosodic, pragmatic and semantic features but also bodily behavior.

Indonesia is considered as a multi–ethnic country with cultural diversity because it has wide variety of tribes, cultures, religions and beliefs. Among the local wisdoms is the Bediom tradition carried out by Lampung Saibatin society. This tradition contains of various values, such as socio-cultural, religious, and Islamic educational value. This research was in form of descriptive analysis which is qualitatative in nature. The research aimed at to explore and analyze the Islamic value contained in Bediom, a traditional house in Lampung Saibatin society. The data were collected through observation, in-depth interview, and documentation. The data analysis is conducted through data reduction, data display, verification and conclusion drawing. The study found that the Bediom tradition of moving traditional house in Lampung Saibatin society implied Islamic educational values, such as the value ​​of monotheism (tauhid), shariah value, and moral value. These three values ​​of Islamic education can strengthen the local wisdom of the Lampung people which are rich in religious values. In addition, the bediom tradition which is full of moral values ​​can also strengthen social relations among multicultural societies. Thus, local wisdom that is full of religious values ​​should continue to be preserved.

Partner responsiveness is a key predictor of likability and overall relationship quality, yet its role in digital communication remains insufficiently studied. This study examined how the inclusion of emojis in text messages influences perceptions of responsiveness and, subsequently, likability, closeness, and relationship satisfaction. A sample of 260 participants viewed 15 text-based conversations in which they assumed that they received responses from their friends. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions (e.g., text-only responses or responses that combined text and emojis) for each conversation. Perceptions of responsiveness, likability, closeness, and relationship satisfaction were assessed using pre-established Likert scales. The results showed that messages containing emojis were perceived as more responsive than text-only messages. Perceived responsiveness, in turn, significantly predicted higher ratings of closeness and relationship satisfaction. These findings demonstrate that the influence of partner responsiveness, enhanced through the use of emojis, extends beyond face-to-face interactions into digital interactions. They highlight the critical role of perceived responsiveness in digital contexts and suggest that emojis can enhance relationship satisfaction by acting as nonverbal cues that complement or substitute face-to-face communication.
