Abstract

In this conceptual paper I examine the cultural sources of organizational resilience during periods of social unsettlement such as political instabilities and national tragedies. My overarching proposition is that in unsettled periods, organizations achieve resilience by symbolically linking the relevance of their activities to the wider social drama. In doing so, organizations help members and external stakeholders re-affirm their sense of a meaningful world, and attain higher levels of support from both. The paper concludes with a discussion of the proposed theory's contributions to research on organizational resilience, organizational culture and ritual, and institutional theory.
