Abstract

Hypercalcemia in the newborn is relatively uncommon but its causes are numerous. Frequently the newborn infant may have no symptoms but severe hypercalcemia may present dramatically with multiorgan involvement and maybe potentially fatal. Treatment generally depends upon whether the hypercalcemia is mild or moderate/severe. The best treatment option depends on rectifying the underlying cause such as iatrogenic excessive calcium supplementation. However severity of hypercalcemia and clinical presentation may dictate a need to reduce the high serum calcium level emergently. There are no standardized guidelines for the management of neonatal hypercalcemia. We report a case of severe neonatal hypercalcemia which was particularly difficult to treat and also present pertinent review of literature.
