Abstract

Infection after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains one of the most dreaded and difficult complications to treat. Infection remains one of the most common reasons for failure of total joint replacement. Several options are available for treatment, including antibiotic suppression with retention of the prosthesis, irrigation and debridement with polyethylene exchange, single and two-stage exchange arthrodesis, amputation, and arthroplasty. This review examines the newest literature and recommendations regarding these various modes of management.
