Abstract
Antibiotic impregnated bead chains in conjunction with staged bone grafting is effective in contributing to the union of bone defects resulting from serious fractures. In addition to eluting high concentrations of antibiotics in the closed wound environment, the antibiotic bead chains function as soft tissue spacers to allow bone grafting at a later date. Because some wounds are not immediately able to be closed, the bead pouch technique, in which antibiotic bead chains are implanted in an open wound and covered by an OpSite dressing, allows sterilization of the bone dead space prior to grafting.
