Abstract

Summary 1. A case of accidental malathionpoisoning occurring after the ingestion of about 8 c.c. of 50 per cent malathion by a 34-month-old child weighing 21 kilograms is presented. Symptoms began fifteen minutes after ingestion and consisted of coma, pulmonary edema, miosis, hypersalivation, muscle flaccidity, involuntary defecation and urination. 2. It is felt that with the recent introductionof the organic phosphorus insecticides as products for the home and garden, physicians everywhere should be alerted to the possibility of such poisoning. The diagnosis, pathologic physiology,symptomatology, and treatment of organic phosphorus insecticide poisoning is discussed.
