Abstract
What does the treatment for a nine‐year‐old diagnosed with encopresis, a 10‐year‐old with conversion disorder, a 12‐year‐old with somatic symptom disorder with predominant pain, a 14‐year‐old with anorexia, and a 16‐year‐old with type I diabetes and anxiety have in common? These diagnostic presentations are among the most frequent presenting problems treated at the Hasbro Children's Partial Hospital Program (HCPHP). The HCPHP is a day treatment program for children and adolescents struggling with both medical and emotional health issues. Despite the diversity of diagnoses and the variety of symptoms, a common thread of the treatment framework at the HCPHP is the theme of “Making Positive Choices.” What does it mean to make a positive choice? At the HCPHP, kids and teens learn about making positive choices with their thoughts and making positive choices with their actions.
