He obtained his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Caltech, his M.S. in mechanical engineering at MIT, and his B.S. in engineering physics from the University of California, Berkeley.Sherman SteinSince retiring from the University of California, Davis, Sherman Stein (stein@math.ucdavis.edu) has written several books, the latest of which is How the Other Half Thinks, which conveys the mathematical style of thinking, using nothing beyond sixth grade arithmetic. His exploration of the equation f(x + h) - f(x - h) = 2hf′(x) appeared in the Monthly in April, 2004. He is currently working on a book-length manuscript intended to help laypersons protect themselves from being manipulated by insiders, experts, and politicians.
