Abstract
SynopsisAn extremely efficient method for the production of highly charged ions has been realized. The method is based on the control of a local ion trap created by the rippled electron beam in a focusing magnetic field. Highly charged ions such as, for example, neon-like iridium can be prepared in the room-temperature hand-size device. This offers wide opportunities for laboratory studies of a variety of physical problems.
