Abstract

An AWWA Research Foundation project, Development of Disinfection Guidelines for the Installation and Replacement of Water Mains, completed in 1996, investigated the questions of why we disinfect water mains the way we do. AWWA issued the first standard for disinfecting water mains in 1947. Over more than 40 years, the AWWA standard appears to have provided adequate safeguards for public health. Current practices are based on years of field experience and common sense. It was time to test new and used pipe and look at actual field situations of new construction and repairs to put some actual data behind the standard. This paper discusses the importance of water main disinfection and the dynamics of chlorination in mains.
