Abstract
A method of fabrication of Co–Pd alloy films with perpendicular anisotropy is described. This method consists in the deposition of alloy films on substrates with a thermal expansion coefficient much less than that of the film, and subsequent annealing of the film in vacuum. The Co–Pd alloy films with Co content of ≈20 at% on quartz glass substrate produced by this method have 750 Oe coercivity and Kerr rotation of 0.22° at 630 nm wavelength. The coercivity can be further increased by additional atmospheric annealing. The dispersion of polar and transversal Kerr effect in these films is studied in the range 0.5–4.5 eV. A radical difference between the spectra of these films and that of bulk Co is found. The spectral regions with maximum effect magnitude are determined. The films investigated can be considered as suitable for perpendicular magnetic recording applications.
