Abstract

Abstract Small oscillations of electrically conducting fluid under the influence of magnetic, Archimedean (buoyancy) and Coriolis forces, taking into account Ohmic diffusion, are considered for conditions corresponding to the Earth's fluid core. The significant rôle played by the nonuniform rotation of the core is stressed. Its effect is investigated by means of greatly simplified planar models. A qualitative picture of the magnetic wave regime probably established in the Earth's core is proposed. On the basis of this picture a simple model of torsional oscillations of the core is constructed.
