Abstract

The magnetic properties of a new 18-layer hexagonal ferrite Ba5Ti3Me2Fe12O31, (Me2+ = Zn, Mg) have been investigated in fields up to 15.5 kOe and temperatures from 4.2 K to Tc. Both the Zn and Mg compounds exhibit an easy plane of magnetization over the temperature range reported, Ea = K1 sin2θ+K2 sin4θ. At most temperatures the magnetization follows a σ = σ0+χH law. Zn-18 H has Tc = 310∓5°K, and nβ(H = ∞, T = 0) = 14.1 ∓0.6 μβ; Mg-18 H has Tc = 391 ∓3°K and nβ(H = ∞, T = 0) = 7.8∓0.5 μβ. A collinear spin model employing positive and negative exchange is proposed.
