Abstract

Magnetization and neutron diffraction studies have been performed on Pr 4Sb 3, Nd 4Sb 3, Sm 4Sb 3 and on the Nd 2Pr 2Sb 3 solid solution (all cubic anti-Th 3P 4-type, Space group I 4 ¯ 3 d , N. 220). Magnetization data on Sm 4Sb 3 reveal a ferromagnetic transition at T C = 168 K. The neutron diffraction study indicates a spin-canted commensurate antiferromagnetic structure below T C = 37 K and 52 K for Pr 4Sb 3 and Pr 2Nd 2Sb 3 compounds, respectively; for Nd 4Sb 3, on lowering the temperature first a ferromagnetic structure appears at T C = 77 K which is followed below T C2 = 39 K again by a spin-canted structure. At 2 K the magnetic moments amount to ∼2.89 μ B/Pr 3+, ∼2.86 μ B/(Pr 0.5Nd 0.5) 3+ and ∼2.98 μ B/Nd 3+, respectively for Pr 4Sb 3, Pr 2Nd 2Sb 3 and Nd 4Sb 3. The magnetic propagation vector is in all cases κ = [0, 0, 0]. The canting increases when going from Nd 4Sb 3 over Nd 2Pr 2Sb 3 to Pr 4Sb 3.
