Abstract

The magnetization of Mn 1+δ Sb is known to decrease linearly with increase of the amount, δ, of the excess Mn atoms. Therefore, the magnetic moments of the excess Mn atoms were considered to be directed antiparallel to the regular site Mn moments. The magnetic polarization of the excess Mn atom is studied for Mn 1.05 Sb and Mn 1.18 Sb by using the polarized neutron technique. It is observed that there is no magnetic moment on the excess Mn atoms. Therefore the decrease of the magnetization with increasing δ comes from the decrease of the magnetic moment on the regular site Mn atoms, and this result suggests that an excess Mn atom donates electrons to the regular site Mn atoms.
