Abstract

The following magnetic disturbances as observed during March, 1920, at the Observatory are here briefly reported upon, the times given being 120th east meridian standard time.A magnetic disturbance was recorded on March 4 and 5, during which time there was serious interruption in the telegraphic service in Australia. The movements began suddenly and simultaneously in the three magnetic elements at 19h 39m P. M. (120th east meridian standard time) on March 4, but were not large until the early morning of March 5. During the night of March 5 conditions gradually returned to normal. The most important movement occurred between 5h 00m and 12h on March 5, when the horizontal intensity was reduced by about 1 per cent of its value; the changes in declination and vertical intensity were not very large.
