Abstract

The anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment and the magnetic dipole term can be obtained directly with magnetic circular X-ray dichroism in a transverse geometry, where the spins are forced out of their easy direction of magnetization. Strong effects are expected at surfaces and interfaces. We demonstrate with the example of an iron monolayer on Ni(1 1 0) that non-collinear moments can give rise to large changes in the dichroism of the L 2,3 absorption spectrum. The ratio between orbital and spin moment can be used to determine the easy direction of magnetization.
