Abstract

Organic basis ofgastrointestinal symptoms is in thescope ofmany specialists. In this article lymphocytic gastritis, relatively newly described and not widely-known entity is presented. Thelesion is characterized by presence ofnumerous mature lymphocytes in thesurface and foveolar epithelium, as well as lymphocytic infiltration ofthelamina propria. According to thedefinition at least 25 lymphocytes per 100 gastric epithelial cells is now required for thediagnosis. Literature found in wide range ofdatabases was searched for morphological features oflymphocytic gastritis and its relationship with others coexisting or predisposing conditions or lesions. Astrong positive correlation between celiac disease and Helicobacter pylori infection, and occurrence and severity oflymphocytic gastritis was revealed. Arelationship was also found between lymphocytic gastritis and gastric lymphomas and other conditions.
