Abstract

Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis is an important arthropod-borne emerging zoonotic disease, which has been reported from the USA, Europe and Asia. Lyme disease is considered as an “extremely misunderstood” disease as the most commonly used diagnostic test available for screening this disease can overlook up to 70% of early-stage cases. The diagnostic tests available for detection of lyme disease cannot distinguish among resolved, active and recurrent infections, causing diagnostic dilemmas. The lack of familiarity about this disease among medical practitioners, display of non-specific symptoms or overlapping symptoms, lack of highly sensitive diagnostic testing facilities and high antigenic variability of pathogens is making the diagnosis of lyme disease very difficult. Due to the emergent nature of this disease along with the fact that this disease is extremely misunderstood, the present review aims to reveal various aspects of lyme disease like disease etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and control.
