Development and Application of Portland Traffic System Performance Evaluation System
  • Jan 1, 1997
  • Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board
  • Loren Bloomberg + 2 more

The city of Portland’s Traffic System Performance Evaluation (TSPE) system is an innovative, practical, and cost-effective tool for monitoring traffic system performance in response to federal, state, and local legislation. It has been designed, implemented, and applied using readily available traffic data. The TSPE goes beyond traditional level-of-service analysis and gives the city a means to identify operational deficiencies and provide a baseline for future performance monitoring. The TSPE includes five performance indicators that were crafted in response to questions about traffic performance and in recognition of the costs and availability of data to support performance evaluation. Each of the five indicators addresses a specific element of traffic performance. District accessibility measures the ease of access to and egress from major activity centers by examining the delay at gateway intersections. The street origin-destination characteristics indicator assesses the percentage of nonlocal trips on streets with different functional classifications. Travel time is measured on a set of specific routes between activity centers. The traffic flow indicator assesses the variation in speeds on major roadways. The multimodal service levels indicator assesses multimodal operational performance based on service levels for four different transportation modes (vehicular, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian) along a corridor. The system has proved to be relatively easy and inexpensive to apply. Other jurisdictions developing performance evaluation systems should consider integrating some components of the TSPE system.

Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Inventory Systems Using Batch Deterministic and Stochastic Petri Nets
  • Nov 1, 2007
  • IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, Part C (Applications and Reviews)
  • Karim Labadi + 2 more

This paper presents our work on modeling and performance analysis of inventory systems using batch deterministic and stochastic Petri nets (BDSPNs). It addresses issues frequently raised by industrial companies, but did not receive enough attention by the Petri nets (PNs) community in spite of its important role in the study of discrete event systems. The BDSPN is a new class of PNs capable of describing the synchronization of discrete and batch token flows in discrete batch processes. Such processes appear in inventory systems or more general supply chains where materials are purchased in finite discrete quantities (batches of different sizes), and many operations such as inventory replenishment and customer order fulfillment are usually performed in a batch way because of the batch nature of customer orders and/or in order to take advantages of the economies of scale. In this paper, the BDSPN model is formally introduced, and its conflict resolutions of transitions and batch firing indexes are addressed. The model is then applied to the modeling and performance evaluation of various inventory systems. Analytic performance evaluation techniques are developed for the model with illustrative applications to the inventory systems. Our study shows that the model is powerful for both modeling and performance evaluation of the systems.

Study on production system performance with Petri net analysis model with grey parameters
  • Nov 1, 2007
  • Yuan Liu + 1 more

The existing Petri Net researches of production system always define the trigger rates as some certain values. The problems can bring some risks or mistakes to analysis, evaluation and prediction of system performance, causing the managers hard to make the right, proper and efficient production plans and decisions. According to this, writers introduce Grey System theory into Petri Net, setting some uncertain trigger rates as interval grey numbers, firstly defining Grey Petri Net theory and designing its modeling, algorithm and analysis methods. At last, the writers establish a Grey Petri Net model to illustrate its algorithms and analysis methods, making some analysis and the evaluation of System Performances as machine utilization, productivity and system cycle time, get a good effect.

  • Yan Ma + 1 more

This study addresses the development of lecturers’ performance evaluation system specifically designed for applied universities. It analyzes the existing lecturer’s performance evaluation system in applied universities in Shaanxi Province and highlights several problems based on facts. The current lecturer performance evaluation system in applied universities is very similar to the system used in research universities, and it is found not suitable for the special requirements of applied universities. The indicators used in the performance evaluation system suffer from problems such as excessive quantification, imperfection, rigidity, and dogmas that lack scientific rigor in practical application. Through the literature, the study found that there are not many researches on applied universities. However, the existing research lacks the following three parts. First, there is a lack of performance evaluation policies for applied university lecturers. Second, the performance evaluation indicators are not in line with the talent training goal of applied university. Third, as a feature of application-oriented undergraduate social service research is also very few. Based on this, the main objective of this study is to develop a performance evaluation system for applied university lecturers, taking into account the educational objectives and characteristics of applied university. In this study, semi-structured interviews are used to collect data from research participants to understand the existing performance evaluation system of applied university lecturers from different perspectives and how they think it can be improved. Then form an applied university lecturer performance evaluation system.

An expert system for performance evaluation of Unix-based computer systems
  • Mar 28, 1994
  • Yong Meng Teo

The design of computer systems has historically been focused on determining the needs of users and packaging the needs into applications. It is generally assumed that the computer system configuration and system software will deliver acceptable performance levels. Issues related to system performance and capacity have received insufficient attention even though its importance has been recognised. Expert system technology offers potential to support performance evaluation and capacity planning of computer systems. The author describes development efforts in the design, development, and use of a cost-effective PC-based expert system, CPEES, for performance evaluation of Unix-based computer systems. A discussion is given on the external conceptual architecture and internal structure of the proposed expert system, its prototype implementation on a Unix multiprocessor computer system, and the operation of CPEES and steps involved in the flow of consultation. >

Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Production Lines Using the Modeling Language MOSEL
  • Jan 1, 1996
  • G Bolch + 1 more

Modeling and performance evaluation of current production systems gains more and more importance because of growing system complexity and production costs. Therefore tools and methods are needed that allow a simple modeling and performance evaluation of systems. The goal of this paper is to give a short introduction into the specification of production systems using the model description language MOSEL (MOdeling Specification and Evaluation Language) [BoHe95] and the analysis tool MOSES (MOdeling Specification and Evaluation System) [BGJZ94, BGR95] which uses MOSEL as input. Therefore the characteristics of the components of production systems (like batch processing or unreliable machines) are introduced. For each of these characteristics a MOSEL specification is given and explained. On the example of a wafer production system [Rand86] it is shown that using our specification language also realistic production systems can be specified and analyzed.
