Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the meaning of motherhood for the pregnant woman who discovers she is seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus during prenatal exam, and its repercussions in their hope. This qualitative study was based on narratives and used the theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism. Eight women were interviewed, and after analyzing the data, the results were organized into three thematic units: 'being a mother', 'treat yourself' and ‘surrender to divine intervention'. It was identified that their hope has straight relation to being a mother, when the protection of their child in order to be seronegative becomes their goal in life. Self-care is understood as the way to ensure success and, when they experience hopelessness they intensify interaction with the child and with God .

RESUMO Ter conhecimento da soropositividade para o vírus da imunodeficiência humana no período gestacional traz sofrimentos e afeta a esperança da mulher. O objetivo do presente estudo foi descrever o significado de maternidade para a gestante que descobre sua soropositividade para o vírus da imunodeficiência humana no pré-natal e a repercussão deste significado em sua esperança. Ter conhecimento da soropositividade para o vírus da imunodeficiência humana (HIV) no período gestacional exerce grande impacto na vida da mulher. Gestar com o conhecimento da soropositividade para o HIV é uma situação que remete à esperança/desesperança, construtos articulados à existência[5,6]. À luz do questionamento de como a gestante que descobriu a soropositividade para o HIV no pré-natal vivencia a esperança durante a gestação, o presente artigo teve como objetivo descrever o significado de maternidade para a gestante que descobre sua soropositividade para o HIV no pré-natal e a repercussão deste significado em sua esperança
