Abstract

A new design of a single-layer low-profile, and low-loss reconfigurable reflectarray (RA) element is presented in the X-Band. The design consists of multiple smaller sized patches connected in a square ring. The element is a square of length 10mm (0.33λ at 10 GHz). A surface mount varactor diode is attached in the ring. A biasing line is also considered to isolate the RF signal from DC. The proposed element provides amplitude losses under -1.5 dB for applied voltages varying from 0 to 15 volts. A phase tuning range of 290° is achieved from a single varactor diode @ 10 GHz.
