Abstract

The percentage of elderly persons is increasing in the United States. Nearly two-thirds of the elderly are women, and the proportion of women increases with increasing age. In the industrialized West, 95% of women are expected to reach the menopause and 60% will live past age 75 (1). According to United States Census projections, within just six years, the average life expectancy for women will be 80 yr (2).
