Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate a low power, cw version of an all-optical deflector. The deflection is produced by an induced prism generated by modulation of the cross section of a laser beam in the bulk of a Kerr material consisting of acetone solutions of mesotetraphenylporphine (TPPH 2). Under cw illumination the nonlinearity is predominantly caused by thermal changes. The response time is 200 ms, and the power density required to observe noticeable deflection, was less than one W/cm 2. This material is also potentially useful for high switching rate in the pulsed regime.
