Abstract

Enormous energy savings may be obtained by incorporating solar pool blankets on community-size heated swimming pools. Installation of a removable, practicable cover can eliminate evaporation, which is by far the biggest heat loss factor. The cover also has a considerable effect in reducing convective heat losses. The large volume of water in swimming pools provides built-in thermal storage. The ability of the store to maintain standard comfort water temperatures over lengthy periods in various seasons is shown using the results of comparative thermal testing with two scaled systems, each of 4.71 m 3 capacity and the applicability of these results to installed systems is reviewed.
