Abstract

It would be difficult to name a painter of once great international reputation who is now further out of fashion than Ludwig Knaus (1829–1910). His pictures are elaborately anecdotal, his subject matter is often sentimental, and by the standards of the last century, his drawing and composition are faultless. Because, or in spite of this combination of things (depending upon one's point of view), none of the numerous examples of his work owned by major American galleries are any longer on display, Such terms as “finish”, “gem-like”, “charm”, or “perfection”, which his works evoked in his admiring contemporaries, carry with them today, curiously, a heavy freight of pejorative art-critical meaning. Happily for those whose taste allows them to explore beyond the current mode (and deep into the storage racks), some of the finest paintings by Knaus are owned here.
