Abstract
We have used freeze-fracture electron microscopy to examine the effects of glycerol treatment of unfixed cells of a compact tissue – the uterine luminal epithelial cell. These cells respond in a similar fashion to other cells, i.e., the intramembranous particles (IMPs) become clustered. In addition we show that glycerol reduces the number of microvilli on these cells and we discuss two mechanisms that may contribute to both clustering of IMPs and loss of microvilli.
