Wood, P. R. ; Bessell, M. S. Abstract A sample of 51 long period variables (LPVs) in three relatively unobscured fields toward the galactic center are subjected to JHKL observations. The excessive redness of the longer period galactic center LPVs is interpreted as being due to their lying on an unusually cool giant branch, whose coolness can in turn be interpreted as the result of a metal abundance that is about 2.5 times the solar value. These results suggest that the galactic bulge contains stars with a range in mass and age, where the young stars have significantly enhanced metal abundances and the older stars have metal abundances similar to those of the LPVs in the solar vicinity. The existence of cool, luminous M stars in the bulge is discussed in relation to stellar synthesis models of galaxies.
