Methodologically, this study used a qualitative ethnographic method with a descriptive approach. The Tabot ceremony is a religious ceremony adapted into a cultural ethnic festival. The history of this ceremony originates from the tradition of the Shia sect which seeks to commemorate Husen's death in Padang Karbala, in 680. Apart from the Tabot, Bengkulu also has unique cultural heritage through Besurek batik cloth. very memorable. The meanings and values implied in it contain lessons that have an effect on human life in the city of Bengkulu and other areas. So that we can take values and apply them and adapt them in our daily lives. The concept of conserving Bengkulu local wisdom as a form of cultural identity is one of the aims of initiating the development of Bengkulu city branding. From the concept of city branding, Bengkulu will be a color in the national culture, giving identity to the Indonesian nation and can be used by all people. Food, art, books : a case study of the cultural politics of rural place branding
  • Jan 1, 2012
  • Andrew Ian Fordham

Using a multi-sited ethnographic case study, this thesis examines the development of rural place brands in three towns in Scotland. Engaging with the literatures on place branding and entrepreneurial governance, and the theoretical work of Pierre Bourdieu, this thesis critically examines how and why the place brands in a rural context were developed; how the places were transformed (reconstructed) through branding; the struggles and contestations within the branding process; and the perceived audiences for such developments. It is argued that whilst there are numerous similarities in the developments of the brands, there are also significant differences to that of urban place branding. This thesis thus problematises the application of theories of branding developed in urban areas to rural contexts. It is also argued that, despite the branding literature suggesting that brands promote a clear, coherent and holistic identity for place (see Kavaratzis, 2005), the development of brands in the current research has been deeply contested, and fraught with various struggles over how the brand (and the place more broadly) should be represented. This thesis thus challenges the extent to which a clear, coherent and holistic identity of the brand (and place) can be established. Finally, whilst it has been argued that place marketing and branding strategies seek to target specific audiences (as was also the case in the current research) (see Gotham, 2002), this thesis argues that in practice, this is a deeply problematic process as the audience of place brands is actually rather diverse. In sum, this thesis makes a significant contribution to our knowledge on place branding by providing an in-depth critical examination of place branding processes in a rural context, which has been all too often neglected by a dominant focus on the urban.

  • Apr 29, 2024
  • Journal of Innovation in Educational and Cultural Research
  • Festiyed Festiyed + 6 more

Research related to ethnoscience from culture, local wisdom, and local potential in Indonesia in the last seven years has developed, but there are still few studies conducted in Physics Education. This study aims to identify and review ethnophysics research from various cultures in Indonesia. A systematic literature review method was used with four stages: identification, selection, eligibility, and inclusion. Of the 695 journal articles screened through Mendeley and Google Scholar applications, 12 were selected as research samples because they met the research criteria. The literature review shows that the cultural aspects studied are still limited to traditional dances, games, and houses. The research is also limited to several regions such as Jayapura, Demak, East Java, West Java, Jambi, West Sumatra, Aceh, South Sulawesi, and South Central Timor in a regional or ethnic context. The physics materials studied include measurement, waves, sound, reflection and refraction of light, lunar and solar eclipses, the concept of energy and its transformation, heat, density, gravity, Newton's law, balance, work, force, motion, magnetic fields, and electric fields. Further research can be done through cultural studies, local wisdom, or local potential from unreached areas in Indonesia. The findings of this study indicate the need for a broader and deeper exploration of ethnoscience in physics education through culture, local wisdom, and other local potential in Indonesia as a learning resource for students in the classroom.

The author places more emphasis on the power of data analysis and existing data sources by relying on concepts and theories to be interpreted in discussions. The values of character education contained in the Merti Desa tradition included spiritual values, social attitudes, and manners. These values include gratitude to God Almighty, obedience and adherence to what was taught in religion; reflects the attitude of working together to solve common problems and mutual cooperation; appreciate and respect others, and have insight that prioritizes public interests rather than personal interests. City Brand: Key Components, Integrated Marketing Communication Strategies, and Strategic Initiatives for Enhancing Suzhou's Unique City
  • Apr 23, 2025
  • HUMAN BEHAVIOR, DEVELOPMENT and SOCIETY
  • Xixuan Liu + 2 more

Aim/Purpose: This research aims to identify the key components of Suzhou’s city brand, evaluate the effectiveness of its integrated marketing communication (IMC) strategies, and propose actionable initiatives to enhance the city's global brand identity. By addressing these objectives, the study seeks to strengthen Suzhou’s position as a cultural and economic hub, providing practical recommendations for policymakers and marketers to improve its global recognition and appeal. Introduction/Background: City branding has emerged as a critical strategy for fostering economic growth, cultural prominence, and tourism development. Suzhou, known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and robust economic profile, faces the challenge of effectively positioning itself as a global city in a competitive international landscape. This study focuses on leveraging Suzhou’s unique assets to strengthen its city brand through strategic IMC initiatives. The research highlights the need to balance tradition with innovation to attract international audiences and investment by aligning the city's historical and cultural identity with contemporary marketing practices. Methodology: This qualitative case study explored Suzhou’s city brand and integrated marketing communication (IMC) strategies through primary and secondary data collection. Primary data consisted of in-depth interviews with 15 tourism brand managers from Suzhou’s cultural tourism industry, selected for their expertise in IMC and branding initiatives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face with audio recordings (with consent) and supplemented by notes. Secondary data included reports, academic studies, and official documents, providing historical and contextual insights. Thematic analysis identified patterns within the qualitative data, supported by triangulation to ensure reliability and validity. Member checking allowed participants to review and verify interpretations, further enhancing credibility. This approach revealed both strengths and areas for improvement in Suzhou’s branding strategies. Findings: The study revealed that Suzhou’s city brand is anchored in four primary pillars. First, its rich historical and cultural heritage, characterized by well-preserved ancient architecture, classical gardens, and vibrant traditions, forms the cornerstone of its identity. Second, the city’s economic strength and market potential, driven by thriving industries and an innovation-focused economy, establish it as a regional economic powerhouse. Third, Suzhou’s high quality of life, combining urban conveniences with natural beauty, significantly enhances its appeal as a livable destination. Lastly, its diverse tourism resources, including UNESCO World Heritage sites and picturesque waterways, position Suzhou as a premier destination for both domestic and international tourists. To strengthen its brand, Suzhou has implemented effective IMC strategies. Social media campaigns promote cultural events, festivals, and tourism packages on platforms like WeChat, Weibo, and Instagram. Online advertising leverages targeted ads to reach global audiences, while promotional events such as trade shows, cultural festivals, and business forums showcase the city’s strengths. These initiatives have significantly bolstered Suzhou’s brand recognition, increased tourism, and enhanced its global reputation. Despite these successes, challenges persist. Inconsistent branding messages across platforms dilute the city’s core identity, while limited use of certain digital platforms and insufficient engagement with international audiences restrict Suzhou’s outreach. Addressing these challenges is crucial to solidifying its global brand presence. Contribution/Impact on Society: This research contributes to the field of city branding and marketing communication by providing actionable insights into how cities can leverage their unique assets to enhance global recognition. The study highlights how cities like Suzhou can integrate their cultural heritage, economic strengths, and tourism resources to create a compelling city brand. It also addresses challenges such as inconsistent messaging and underutilization of digital platforms, offering recommendations for improvement. For policymakers and marketers, the research underscores the importance of coordinated strategies for sustainable urban development, attracting investment, tourism, and talent, and ensuring long-term economic and cultural growth. Recommendations: To further enhance Suzhou’s city brand, it is recommended that a stronger synergy between online and offline marketing efforts be developed, a cohesive and unified visual identity be established, and marketing activities across various communication platforms be integrated. Additionally, existing challenges in marketing implementation should be addressed by focusing more on Suzhou’s cultural heritage, drawing inspiration from global best practices, and targeting specific audience segments, all of which would significantly strengthen Suzhou’s brand identity and appeal. Research Limitation: The study is limited by its qualitative approach and the relatively small sample size of 15 informants, which may not fully capture the diversity of perspectives on Suzhou’s branding efforts. Furthermore, the research focuses exclusively on Suzhou, making it less applicable to cities with differing cultural, economic, or social contexts. Future Research: Future studies should explore the long-term effects of IMC strategies on city branding through longitudinal research, offering insights into strategy evolution and sustained impact. Quantitative approaches could confirm variables in city branding and IMC, enabling a more robust analysis. Additionally, research on audience segmentation using demographic, behavioral, and psychographic data can enhance tailored marketing strategies. Comparative studies across cities could also identify best practices and innovative approaches to city branding.

Defining the concepts of brand and city brand
  • Dec 29, 2020
  • Bulletin of "Turan" University
  • A P Sadullaeva

Brand as a concept and as a research topic is widely discussed in the academic world. A considerable number of scientific articles by foreign scientists are devoted to the study of brands and brands of cities. It should be noted, that there is no common understanding of the brand as a concept among experts and researchers. For example, some researchers define a brand as a trade mark that has a high reputation to a consumer, while others associate the concept of brand with a concept of image. Each scientist or specialist takes into account the specifics of the brand or the nuances of the brand, and this all complicates the interpretation of the brand, as well as its management. The situation is the same when it comes to the concept of a city brand. There are many definitions that explain what this concept means. For example, a city brand is a set of general associations that arise among residents and visitors of the city when this city is mentioned. However, it should be noted that the formation of a city brand is a set of measures aimed at creating a certain image of the city. In this case, branding of an entire city is a much more complex issue than branding a person or a product, since the target audience of a city is all citizens, tourists, officials and potential investors. Thus, the article is devoted to the definition and systematization of the concepts of “brand” and “city brand”. The author of the article analyzed the above terms which have been published in scientific scientific journals in the fields of marketing, brand management, economics and international management.
