Abstract
This chapter explores the different spaces for, and kinds of, Huastecan intellectuals. It considers the spatial organization and dynamics of Huastecan regional culture. Intellectuals of different classes and cultural groups are vested with the task of producing “coherent” cultural syntheses of intimate culture and of their place in the culture of social relations. Moreover, it investigates the sorts of localist ideologies that emerge from a “provisional” intellectual that occupies the position of regional representative of Huastecan culture vis-à-vis the outside as well as representing “high” culture in Ciudad Valles. It reports material of a traditional intellectual of the peasant class, Don José Rivera, a healer in a small Nahua/Mestizo pueblo. In the cases of Eustaquio and Joaquín, it is seen that there is a social need on behalf of the state and—to a lesser extent—the communities for constitution of an internal-articulatory Indian intelligentsia.
