Abstract

Abstract The semi-analytical finite strip method is described briefly, and is verified against independent experimental results. The agreement is shown to be good. The method is then applied to obtain local buckling coefficients for I-sections subjected to axial compression and bending about both principal axes. It is shown how the buckling coefficients can be used to obtain accurate width-to-thickness ratios for the flanges of I-beams for which the section classification is semi-compact. These limiting slendernesses vary quite significantly over a range of combinations of axial force and bending moments.
