Abstract

The matter of beauty is approached from the analysis of its privation, ugliness, as another way to clarify what beauty properly is, concerning the beautiful and ugly «inside» as well as «outside». Beauty stands in relation to truth and good, but it is also a kind of good and a human good, and we may accordingly ask whether we have some moral responsibility regarding beauty. And likewise whether its contrary, ugliness, bears some kind of evil and indignity. Firstly, it wll be necessary to attend to beauty's ontological dimension. Secondly, the moral dimension of beauty within the «threefold dimension» of the person (truth, good and beauty), with regard to its existential destiny. Lastly, the previous reflections are applied to art, which is the work of beauty, and the influence of the artistic ideal on the person.
