Abstract

A spate of new projects suggests that LNG is becoming one of the most dynamic sectors of the global energy business. Egypt became the world's latest producer on 20th January 2005, when it exported its first cargo to Spain. Qatar continues to announce new export deals and, in the latest development, Yemen has indicated that it will soon announce its own plans to become an exporter. Other countries, meanwhile, including the US, UK, South Korea and China, are making it clear that they intend to import large volumes of LNG over the next two decades. What is not yet clear, however, is whether the LNG market will be dominated by buyers or sellers in future. There may nevertheless be some indications of the direction the market is heading from some of the deals that are currently under discussion.
